Thai consulate reportedly bar Thai students to attend anti-junta figure’s lecture

The Thai Consulate in Chicago, US, reportedly attempted to prevent overseas Thai students to attend a lecture of a well known anti-junta figure.

According to Pavin Chachavalpongpun, a fierce critic of the Thai junta who is a Thai Associate Professor at the Centre for Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto University, Japan, the Thai Consulate in Chicago, US, last week attempted to prevent Thai students from attending his lecture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

A coalition of university lecturers yesterday called on the government to end its "suppression of academic freedom and independence" or face an intensified campaign.

Led by Anusorn Unno, dean of the faculty of sociology and anthropology at Thammasat Univerity, the network of lecturers made its demand in a petition submitted to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, also chief of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).

Operation followed pictures of the 400 square metre site going viral online
AN underwater garbage-cleanup operation off Karon Beach in Phuket yesterday removed hundreds of kilograms of trash - including from a coral reef.

The Office of Marine and Coastal Resources Management 6 led the operation to clear the garbage field, near Sai Cape, south of Karon Beach.

A network of university lecturers on Monday called for an end to the government's intimidation of academics and students staging activities to express their sincere political opinions.

The demand was made in a statement to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, as chairman of the junta's National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).
