Nestle to fight 'slave labour' in Thailand

ZURICH - Swiss food giant Nestle vowed Tuesday to stamp out any forced labour used in its supply chain in Thailand, after a probe confirmed workers were toiling in "slave-like" conditions to catch and process fish for Nestle products.

"Nestle is committed to eliminating forced labour in our seafood supply chain in Thailand," executive vice president of operations Magdi Batato said in a statement.

The THAI government has made remarkable progress on the issues of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and human trafficking, according to Thai Union Group's president and chief executive, Thiraphong Chansiri.

He said that to be fair to every party, the public should consider whether a report on such issues is "old or new", referring to a Nestle report released this week outlining labour abuse in the Thai fisheries industry.

THE EUROPEAN Parliament's invitation for former premier Yingluck Shinawatra to visit for a meeting was the talk of the town yesterday - on whether the junta and Supreme Court will allow her to leave the country.

A lawyer for Yingluck said she had not contacted him yet to make a request to go abroad.

Yingluck gets invitation to visit from EU Parliament

THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT has invited former premier Yingluck Shinawatra to go to Europe to exchange views on the political situation in Thailand, which it considers "worrying" following the coup.
The venue of the briefing could be conducted either in Brussels or in Strasbourg, France - on any date that Yingluck finds convenient.
